Aaron Strand is no hero. In fact, at the beginning of MacCabe’s “Dance in Darkness”, he is a mere shell of a man, filled with self-loathing and regret and haunted by the ghost of his much more successful sister Lilly, an ace fighter pilot and a genuine war hero who laid down her life in battle against the Coalition forces. When his best friend dies following an unexpected attack on the mothership, Aaron decides to join a dangerous mission and in the process begins his personal journey toward a brave warrior.

MacCabe paints a visceral image of a galaxy at war, skillfully intertwining the fates of the individual protagonists. While the narrative is quite straightforward, the characters are complex, their emotions, motivations, and actions unique and believable. The action scenes are well-written and intense, immersing the reader in the chaos and adrenaline of the large-scale conflict.

Overall, “Dance in Darkness” is a worthy addition to the military science fiction and space opera genres and a must-read for anyone who enjoys following the stories of reluctant heroes overcoming not only external adversities but, more importantly, their own demons.
